Converting PDF pages to images seems simple, but the quality of the output depends on two settings that most tools don't explain well: resolution (DPI) and compression quality. Getting these wrong produces images that are blurry when zoomed in, or unnecessarily large files. This guide explains how to get the best results.

Why PDF-to-image conversion requires decisions

A PDF page can be displayed at any size — it contains instructions for rendering content (text coordinates, image references, vector paths) rather than a fixed grid of pixels. When you convert a PDF page to a JPG image, you're rasterising it: choosing a specific pixel resolution and rendering the page at that size.

The resolution you choose determines how sharp the image looks when zoomed and how large the file is. Choose too low and the image looks blurry. Choose too high and you create enormous files that are overkill for the purpose.

Understanding DPI in PDF to JPG conversion

DPI stands for dots per inch. In the context of PDF-to-image conversion, it's more precisely "pixels per inch" — how many pixels are used to represent each inch of the original PDF page.

A standard A4 page (8.27 × 11.69 inches) at 72 DPI produces an image of 595 × 842 pixels. At 144 DPI, it produces 1190 × 1684 pixels — four times as many pixels, four times the file size. At 300 DPI (print quality), it's 2480 × 3508 pixels.

The right DPI depends entirely on what you're going to do with the image.

Choosing the right resolution for your use case

72 DPI — for thumbnails and web previews: produces small files that look fine on screen at full page view but pixelate when zoomed. Good for document preview images on websites, social media post backgrounds, and any use where the image will be displayed small and never zoomed or printed.

144 DPI — for general use: this is the default in PDF99's converter and covers most practical use cases. The resulting images look sharp on high-resolution laptop and desktop displays at full-screen size, hold up reasonably well when zoomed to 150%, and are appropriate for presentations, client documents, and file archives where print quality isn't required.

216 DPI — for print and detailed content: recommended when the image will be printed at A4 or A5 size, when the PDF contains fine detail (technical diagrams, small text, detailed charts), or when the image will be cropped to focus on a specific area. File sizes are significantly larger but the image quality at print size is excellent.

300 DPI — for professional print: the standard for print-ready artwork. Only necessary for content going directly to a printer or professional publication. For everything else, 216 DPI is usually sufficient and produces much smaller files.

The quality slider: JPG compression explained

JPG quality controls how much compression is applied when the image is saved. Higher quality means less compression, larger file size, sharper image. Lower quality means more compression, smaller file size, softer image.

The relationship isn't linear. The difference between 100% and 85% quality is barely visible but the file size difference can be 50% or more. The difference between 85% and 70% is noticeable on close inspection but acceptable for most uses. Below 60%, JPG compression artefacts become visible — blocky patterns appear in smooth colour areas and fine detail becomes blurry.

For most purposes, 85-92% quality is the sweet spot: visually excellent, substantially smaller than uncompressed. PDF99's converter defaults to 92%, which preserves fine text and diagram detail effectively.

When to use PNG instead of JPG

JPG compression works well for photographs and complex images but produces visible artefacts on content with sharp edges: text, line diagrams, charts with thin lines, and screenshots. If your PDF pages contain primarily this type of content and you need pixel-perfect output, PNG is a better format — it's lossless, so every pixel is preserved exactly.

The trade-off is file size: a PNG of a text-heavy document page is typically 3-5x larger than a JPG of the same page at 90% quality. For photographic content, the PNG size advantage disappears — JPG is better for photos.
